Reference standards for data cables

Scope of standards Cable standardisation is based on the work of two main organisations. The IEC is reponsible for international standards. This organisation writes standards that are valid worldwide. There are additional organisations for Europe, the CENELEC. On the direction of the EU and EFTA, CENELEC bolsters safety guidelines with standards. This is the main reason that most of the European countries demand that Euro Standards (EN) are the standards followed.
System standards ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173 serve as the directive documents for standardising data cables. Chapters 7 or 8 here formulate the basic requirements and defined in the following documents.
International standards for
symmetric data cables
International guidelines, informative for Europe
The ISO/IEC 11801
is valid worldwide.
The TIA/EIA
is valid in the USA
ISO/IEC IS 11801 Information Technology
- Generic Cabling for Customer Premises
IEC 61156
Multicore and symmetrical pair/quad cables for digital communications
IEC 61156-1: Generic specification
IEC 61156-2: Horizontal floor wiring - Sectional specification
IEC 61156-3: Work area wiring - Sectional specification
IEC 61156-4: Riser cables - Sectional specification
These international documents specify the data cables of category 3, 4 and 5, not only for installation cables and backbone cables, but also for work area and patch cables. In their requirements, they are almost identical to the leading European standards  HD608, EN50167, EN50168 und EN50169.

European standards for symmetric data cables
European guidelines,standard in Europe

The EN 50173 is
standard in Europe

EN 50173 Information technology
- Generic Cabling for Customer Premises
prEN 50288-1 Generic specification for multi-element metallic cables used in analogue and digital communication and control
prEN 50288-2 Sectional specification for screened cables
characterised up to 100 MHz
prEN 50288-3 Sectional specification for unscreened cables
characterised up to 100 MHz
prEN 50288-4 Sectional specification for screened cables
characterised up to 600 MHz
These standards should replace the old documents (HD 608, EN 50167, EN 50168 and EN 50169) in the future. They form a new structure of the standards part for symmetrical and multi-element cables for communication and control that allows specifying new documents depending on market requirements and allows incorporating them into the specification. These standards were completed in 1997 and were issued for agreement in 1998. An additional document for cables to 200 MHz has been worked on since January 1998.
